Why does my webpage look great on my monitor, but not so good (or very different) on my customers or someone elses monitor?

One of the first things you will realize when designing web pages is that (with respect to the look and sizing of the page) you cannot please everyone. With the seemingly endless number of screen sizes and resolutions out there, it is impossible to design a webpage that looks the same or perfect on everyone's computer.

So what do you do?
Design the web page so that MOST of the vistors to your site will see a visually pleasing and structured web page.

General rules of thumb:
  • The most common screen/monitor size used is 15". More and more people are going to 17" monitors now, but there are still a vast number of computer owners and businesses that use 15" monitors.
  • The most common screen resolution is 800x600. If your visitor is using a 15" monitor then it is highly likely that they are using an 800x600 resolution (800 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall). If they are using a 17" monitor then they are probably using a 1024x768 resolution, the second most common resolution.
    Why does this matter?
Your page needs to be designed with these pixel dimensions in mind, or just use percentages (100% will fill the screen width-wise no matter what screen resolution your visitor is using)
